Outdoor School Parent Meeting

March, 2016

Dear 4th Grade Families,

Each year, 5th grade students at Hidden Valley get to participate in Outdoor School at Camp Loma Mar in Pescadero. For this year’s fourth graders, it will be taking place in the fall of 2016 when they are in 5th grade. We’ll be in the Santa Cruz mountains learning about science, social studies, and lifelong learning skills.

We would like to invite you to an informal meeting to discuss the 5th grade Outdoor School experience that our children will be attending in the fall of 2016. We invite you to come to this meeting to find out more about the camp and how much of a donation it takes for our children to attend this wonderful learning experience. Questions about Outdoor School will be answered at this meeting. We will also be discussing a few fundraising ideas that we have that can reduce the cost of Outdoor School. We hope to see you in the Multi Use Room on Monday, March 21st at 6:30 pm.

Outdoor School, or Outdoor Education, is an integral part of 5th grade science, social studies, community building, and life skill programs.   Unlike summer or day camp, the focus is not merely on having fun (although there’s plenty of that!) the experience enhances academic and life skill standards, taught in a different setting…outdoors. The program completely reinforces the new Common Core standards, using inquiry based learning, real life situations, and hands-on experiences. We are one of many schools in the Mt. Diablo Unified School District who attend Outdoor School.

Parents, please, please, attend the Outdoor School meeting on Monday, March 21. So mark your calendars for 6:30 PM in the Multi Use Room   We appreciate your attendance.

Thank you,

The 5th Grade Outdoor School Committee

We have launched a fundraiser to support Outdoor School. Packets of information from Mixed Bag Designs went home with 4th graders on Friday.
