“We have to have the mentality that we have to work for everything we’re going to get.”

The LAST week of school?! Where did the last month go? I’ll tell you where! Teacher Appreciation week, Father Daughter Dance, Spring Book Fair, Open House, and Our Multicultural Event! Fourth grade has continued their efforts to raise funds for their 5th grade camp trip. Lots of behind the scenes volunteer time, that’s for sure!

The PFC has received some thank you cards for helping our teachers, administration, and support staff feel appreciated. Thank you, Dolores Escorcio! Your hard work, decisions on the fly, and dedication are greatly appreciated. Thank you to all the room parents and volunteers who made this week so special!

The Spring Book Fair had about $9,400 in sales! Great work Amanda Bentley Moses! Thanks for managing this fundraiser and thank you to all the volunteers and supporters who have helped raise funds for Hidden Valley’s reading incentive program.

This year’s Father Daughter (or special person) Dance was very well attended! There was great music, food, dancing, and pictures. Thank you to Jessica English for managing this community event and to her committee and volunteers for making sure it was an exciting, successful night.

Open house was an eventful night. The Book Fair was open and members of our 4th grade sold treats to benefit their 5th grade camp trip while families visited classrooms and Kate Howes sold spirit wear. During this night, we also voted on Site Council Members and PFC Board Members. Congratulations to all elected volunteers! Official results for your PFC Board will be announced at our PFC meeting on Tuesday, July 7th. (Be sure to tune in for our live Facebook feed.) Thank you to the chair of the election committee, Celeste Altus, and to the members of the election committee. Your time is greatly appreciated.

Sakura Barrientos coordinated her first Multicultural Event which was a HUGE hit! Thank you, Sakura! Thank you to the students who made flags and completed the passport activity, to the volunteers, potluck participants, and our community for coming out and taking advantage of this amazing evening!

June 6th at 6:30 pm in the Library we have our last PFC meeting of the school year and our 2nd budget meeting. We have Contra Costa Cinemas summer movie tickets available for sale in which 100% of the proceeds go to your PFC. Fill out an order form available in the office. Remember, All-In-One Day is on August, 17th! With that, I sign off for the summer. Thank you for your continued support and congratulations to all graduates, parents, teachers, and staff on a successful school year! Have a fun and safe summer.

Dear Hidden Valley Learning Community,

It’s hard to believe that this is my final newsletter at Hidden Valley. While I’m excited to be embarking on a new adventure, I am also sad to be leaving such an amazing school and learning community. I have thoroughly enjoyed the time that I have been here. The teachers and staff could not do the work we do without the incredible effort that parents make to provide such a high level of support for this school. We appreciate all that you do. I am proud to have served as your principal.

The last day of school will be this Friday, June 9th. Dismissal will be at 12:30 for grades 1-5. A bag lunch will be available for those students who have already turned in a form. Kindergartners will be dismissed at 11:15, and will not have lunch at school that day.

Congratulations goes out to Tracey Rentner, who gained the votes needed during Open House to become our newest parent member of the School Site Council. Heather Abrahimi will be our first alternate SSC member, and Karly Moura will be second alternate. Thank you to all parents who submitted their names for the School Site Council ballot.

On May 26th we completed CAASPP testing, which included the new on-line science test for 5th graders. A huge thank you goes out to everyone in our school community who helped us complete testing in a smooth and successful manner. We are especially grateful to Michele Beach, our Intervention Specialist, who served as our CAASPP Coordinator. Dina Oakes, our Technology Specialist (who is funded by the PFC) was instrumental in making sure that all the technology needs were met. Much appreciation also goes out to our teachers, instructional assistants, parents (who made sure children were well fed and rested), and the 3rd-5th grade students who gave it their very best effort. We look forward to seeing CAASPP results in August.

While summer is a great time to relax and have fun, it’s also important for children to maintain the academic skills they’ve worked so hard to build over the course of the school year. Any type of educational experience will benefit your child, and free choice reading is always a great option. You will still have access to the educational software that is available throughout the year (iReady, IXL, etc.), so please be sure to take advantage of these programs.

I encourage you to check out the reading program at your local public library. Hidden Valley librarian, Ryann Kuiper, has shared information with your child’s class about the program that is offered by the Contra Costa County Library.  Here is the link:

Thank you so much for all you’ve done to help your child(ren) have a successful school year. On behalf of all the teachers and staff at Hidden Valley, I wish you and your family a safe and enjoyable summer break.

All the best,

Rich Gorton
